Dec 30 Breakfast Run 2018

President Jim Wilson squeezed in one more Sunday morning breakfast run as the final impromptu club activity for 2018. This event took participating members through the morning fog to Arcadia for breakfast at Terra Fried Chicken. Terra Fried Chicken has great reviews for breakfast and offers more than just fried chicken parts. The temperature was in the 70’s so it was a perfect top-down day for driving. Following Jim’s TR6 were a Lotus, Jaguar, Mini, Maserati and a Ferrari. The cars logged about 120 miles round-trip. Thanks to Joe Malaney for input.

Anniversary Extravaganza 2018

Dancing the night away, at least ’til 9 PM.

On December 9, we celebrated the holiday season and the anniversary of the founding of our car club with a Dinner – Dance Extravaganza at the Venetian Golf & River Club in Venice, Florida. The holiday party was a joint effort between the SBCC and the Sunshine Region AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America).

The evening started off with light appetizers and adult beverages in the lounge and then progressed to a sumptuous buffet dinner featuring vodka chicken parmesan, grilled salmon and pork tenderloin. Dinner was followed by dancing to classic music from a local DJ. About 50 members attended and all enjoyed the opportunity to “dress up” and trade driving shoes for the dancing shoes.

Drive to Peace River Seafood Restaurant 2018

On December 1, club president, Jim Wilson, organized another one of his gastronomical destination drives, this time to the Peace River Seafood restaurant in Punta Gorda, FL. After meeting at the familiar Texaco station on East Fruitville road, the group travelled south on scenic back roads arriving at the target just in time for lunch and some of the best and freshest seafood in the area. Stone crab claws were still in season! This eatery remains a little bit of Old Florida.

Ten cars and 18 members participated in this spirited drive under great “winter” weather conditions. It was an awesome lunch and many of those there were already requesting a return visit.

International Cricket Finals 2018

One of our regular annual winter events is the “Six a Side” International Cricket Finals at the Lakewood Ranch Cricket Club. It’s a three-day round robin tournament and we are invited to come on the concluding day (finals), which this year was on November 25. This year’s event featured six squads representing London, the Cayman Islands, a mixed team from down under (Australia and New Zealand), plus entries from Florida, including the local Sarasota club.

Twelve cars met at the Outback Steak House on University Blvd and caravanned the short distance to the field. Our LBC’s were on static display throughout the day and at half time slowly paraded around the field to be admired by the fans. The announcer correctly identified our individual cars as we drove past the stands, although those in the mostly British crowd were familiar with the various marques.

6th Annual Gator Boys Camp Car Show (2018)

On November 3, we held our annual Gator Boys Camp Car Show. The Gator Wilderness Camp School is a private school for troubled boys from 10 to 15 years of age located in a remote part of Charlotte County, Florida. For the past several years, our club has held a members’ car show and picnic for the boys and their counselors. Many of the youths from the camp can benefit from positive contact with adults and we try to provide this with our cars as a catalyst.

There were a number of activities planned for the day. The boys judged which British car they liked the best and the owner wass awarded the Peter Clark Memorial Trophy. The boys also participated in a car design contest where their drawings were judged for thoughtfulness, ingenuity and creativity. And this year one of our racing members, Bob Tone, gave a talk about racing and what is required if you want to do it. He showed the boys his racing gear including helmet, gloves, socks, etc. And, of course, there was a catered picnic lunch, followed with dessert provided by the club’s fantastic bakers. We had a great turnout with 22 British cars, over 40 members and 18 boys and their counselors.

Thanks to Duane and Ellen Magnuson for again hosting this event at their home.
